Coping with emotionally challenging expectations: Japanese beginning teachers and their relationships with students’ parents’

چکیده

This article examines emotionally challenging expectations in the relationships beginning teachers have with students’ parents. The data consist of narrative interviews 17 Japanese teachers. Due to strong cultural and social norms prescribing appropriate interactions, little leeway negotiating parents’ expectations. We found that described facing three their parents: 1) they do not fully understand what is expected them; 2) are turn colleagues for help difficult issues involving parents; 3) endure learn from criticism. To cope these expectations, perform emotional labour. presents a wider understanding teachers’ work as relational practice offers insights can be used move beyond discourse frames ‘deficit’ perspective.
